More than 100 oil presses were found here, as well as the Ekron Inscription (that clearly identifies the site as Philistine Ekron). The identification of Ekron as Tel Mikne/Khirbet el-Muqanna was suggested by Naveh and Kallai in 1957–1958, a theory widely accepted in light of a royal dedication inscription found during the 1996 excavations.
